"My son started karate when he was 6 years
old, and this training has helped immensely with his self esteem
and self discipline. Karate has also helped him to focus his energy at school as well. He's 13 now and
karate still provides him life skills that he can use
everyday." Ken Hintz
"My younger son had been attending his older
brother's karate class since he was born. He's always wanted to
participate. Now, 5 years old he's been a student for a year and
loves it! After watching them all these years I decided to join
too. Great way to get in shape and learn self-defense at the same
time." Alisa Trejo
KARATE IN EVERYDAY LIFE
by Sensei Dorsey
On June 7, 2001, while on my way to work in San Diego I was traveling on I-5 at about 35 miles
per hour. At about 6:45 am, a Ford Explorer was traveling in the number 3 lane, myself the number
2 lane. The Explorer suddenly slammed on his brakes and made an aggressive maneuver, and jumped
into my lane. Upon entering my lane the Explorer's back bumper clipped the front tire of my
motorcycle. At this point I lost control of the motorcycle, slamming it to the ground on the left
side. When the bike struck the ground, it quickly tried to right itself suddenly bringing it back
over onto its right side. At this point the force threw me from the bike.
When I felt myself being thrown into the air I instinctively tucked so that when I hit the ground I
could roll. When I felt my shoulder hit the ground, I tucked my head and began a forward roll.
This roll took me threw the number 2 and 1 lane. After traveling through the two lanes of traffic
I was able to come out of the roll on my feet. Most individuals would have not been able react as
I did. More than likely most would have stayed in a sprawled out position much like Superman, and
flown through the air and probably ended up face first into the pavement.
I attribute my instinctive actions to the Karate training I recieved through IKO. This training
provided me the mental as well as physical tools to walk away from the accident with only a bruised
wrist, bruised ribs from the tight tuck, and a bruised kidney which was from a piece of debris from
the bike that I rolled over. Sensei Jeff Clark has always told us that the training we receive can
be applied in almost any situation. It is hard to believe that when looking from the outside in,
but I am here to attest to his words and his training. I want to thank Sensei Jeff Clark and all
the Sensei's at the Studio for the support, knowledge and training, which provided me with the
ability to walk away from this accident. |
